Talk on Italian ‘lesbian’ literature, Birmingham Shout festival of queer culture, November 2011

Shout Talk

Click on the link above to download the PDF of this talk. It is a bit of a whistlestop tour of the kinds of texts I am looking at in my research. I give an overview of what was happening in terms of lesbian cultural representation in Italy from around 1870 to the present day, summarising some of the main trends. I also mention English-language novels that were being read or were/are translated, and give details of the few texts that are translated into English.

I'm a lecturer and researcher at the University of Birmingham, UK. My main interests are contemporary Italian culture, and gender and sexuality. My current project explores the representation of lesbian identities and desire between women in Italian novels and media, from 1870 to the present day.
